Inspiration from Mexico City

Travel remains an essential aspect of nurturing my creativity and providing endless inspiration for both my personal life and creative practice. Visiting Mexico City in February 2023 marked my first trip south of the United States. The vibrance and culture of the nearly nine-million-person-city did not disappoint.

This trip was unique because we had two simple goals: first, escape a bit of the Chicago winter and second, work remotely. As such, we did not focus on hitting all of the tourist attractions, going to museums, or exploring many different neighborhoods. We stayed in Roma Norte and simply soaked up all of the local culture and energy in between coffee shop work sessions. Because the trip only lasted from a Monday night through Friday morning, I convinced Daniel to work shortened hours so we could soak up our surroundings and leave feeling inspired and refreshed.

Highlights of the trip included eating all of the tacos and street food, admiring countless handmade goods, taking in the incredible architecture, walking 26,000 steps in a single day, trying a variety of cocktails from three of the top 50 cocktail bars in North America (Mexico City is home to six), falling in love with the frequency of public transit (seriously, buses and trains come every few minutes), and lots of focused sketching and iPad work for me.

I enjoy that I’ve built a life that incorporates frequent travel and allows me to refuel my creativity often. This helps me best enjoy the work that I do, avoid burn out, and provide creative design solutions that consider multiple approaches and perspectives.

Here are some photos from the four-day trip that I hope will give you insight to the beauty of Mexico City and inspire you as well:
