Lettering Works Wins PRA Award

The Public Relations Association of Central Illinois held it’s annual PRA Awards to celebrate the best of the best communication and public relations practices in Central Illinois on Wednesday, May 15th at Peoria’s Civic Center. The Public Relations Association of Central Illinois (PRA) is an organization of public relations, marketing and communication professionals from corporate organizations, small businesses and not-for-profit agencies.

Lettering Works received the “Brilliant Ideas That Never Saw the Light of Day” Award, which was one of four awards given at the ceremony. The other awards categories were “Bang for Your Buck,” “ Best Social Media Campaign,” and “People’s Choice.”

The Brilliant Ideas that Never Saw the Light of Day award was created to recognize an outstanding work or campaign that did not get to make it into the spotlight because it was shut down or never used in the real world. Lettering Works’ “Our Breast Cancer Stories” submission stood out to judges because of it’s humanistic and relatable approach to the often uncomfortable topic of breast cancer.

This proposed book cover design incorporated a very personal feel - from the illustrated bras to the custom lettering - meant to evoke a sense of authenticity and approachability. Conceptually, this direction lined up with the writing of stories, uniqueness of the represented individuals, and would appeal to a younger audience.

THE PROJECT BACKSTORY:

After surviving breast cancer and wanting to share her experiences alongside stories of other cancer survivors, our client came to Lettering Works asking for a logo for “Our Breast Cancer Stories.” The brand would extend to both a website and book filled with real stories of survivors of breast cancer. The goal being to provide hope, encouragement, and honesty to those following in their footsteps.

Halfway through the design development, the client opted for a more traditional representation of breast cancer - including a ribbon and simple typography. It was unfortunate that the design direction morphed into more of what is already on the market and missed an opportunity to show a more human side of breast cancer and individual experiences.
